Qinzhou Port is located in a subtropical monsoon climate where strong monsoon winds and typhoons frequently occur. Strong winds can cause 3–5% loss of fine coal particles from stockpiles, while airborne dust increases wear and maintenance costs for loading and unloading equipment by approximately 20%. PM10 and PM2.5 levels often exceeded regulatory limits. Additionally, heavy rainfall and storms during typhoon season increase the volume of coal-containing wastewater, sometimes exceeding treatment capacity and leads to environmental risks.
SolutionThe windbreak fence system was optimized to withstand typhoon conditions by enhancing panel structural strength and foundation depth. A differentiated height design was adopted, with 18 m fences on the east and west sides and 20 m fences on the north and south sides. High-quality steel panels with dual anti-corrosion treatment were used to withstand high temperature, humidity, and salt exposure. The fencing system also implemented a PLC-controlled intelligent spraying system that automatically adjusts water usage, and coal pile slopes were compacted to a 30°–45° angle before the rainy season.
ResultsThe windbreak fence reduced wind velocity across coal piles, decreasing rainwater erosion and the generation of coal-containing wastewater. The intelligent spraying system reduced water consumption by more than 30%, while a 500 m³/h wastewater treatment facility enabled the terminal to achieve zero discharge of coal-containing wastewater.
