Dandong Port is located at approximately 40° north latitude and has a warm temperate monsoon climate. Northwesterly winds prevail in winter, with extreme temperatures dropping to −28.2 °C, while southeasterly winds dominate in summer, with maximum gust speeds reaching 10–12 m/s. As a bulk cargo port located near an urban area, coal dust dispersion during high-wind periods in April can significantly affect air quality in both the port area and surrounding city.
SolutionOur company worked with the port authorities to jointly design and construct a 4,783-meter windbreak and dust suppression fence system. A differentiated height design was adopted, with fence heights of 17 m on the east and west sides and 20 m on the north and south sides, enabling better adaptation to varying wind directions. The system was integrated with 10 water spray lines and 111 spray nozzles, forming a comprehensive multi-dimensional dust suppression system.
ResultsThe combined system achieved over 85% windbreak and dust suppression efficiency, effectively preventing coal dust from spreading toward nearby urban areas. PM10 concentration at 50 m downwind was controlled below 75 μg/m³, significantly improving air quality in both the port area and Dandong city. The project has become a demonstration case for dust pollution control in port environments.
